February 9, 2012 - This Is What Hell Is Like

February 9, 2012
57° high of 67° - very, very, very, exceeeeedingly sunny.

Listening to: KPCC.

(sort of) live from the fire escape:
* It’s always good to wear a helmet. Always. Especially if you’re an adorable Parisian.
* Tune Yards are scoring Buster Keaton films at the SFIFF. I can not think of anything worse. This is what hell is like.
* In the last week or so, both Fleet Foxes and Best Coast have been answers on Jeopardy! Bethany freaked out a little.

Chinese paleontologists did science to a 165 million year old katydid and figured out that it chirped at 6.4kHz, in 16 millisecond bursts. It sounded like this. Also, congratulations! You just traveled 165 million years in time. Heard something that people before now have never heard, and that hasn’t been heard on the earth in millennia.

Evolution is amazing. Science is amazing.

The Universe, right?

February 2, 2012 - Video Games?

SF, Earth — February 2, 2012
63° at sundown
Listening: David Byrne’s new playlist is five hours of psychedelic music. So…awesome…even with the Sigur Ros. :\

Sundown, Tungsten light-temperature links:
* There’s something completely lovely about green glass and bare wood in a kitchen. Totally gorgeous.
* Russian Maffia is on fire at Little Plastic Horses.
* LA and NY pals check out the upcoming art things this week on C-Monster
* Artist and Destroy All Monsters founder Mike Kelley has died.
* Every K-mount lens Pentax has ever made on a gorgeous body with great features? That apparently is the Pentax K-1
* The Susan G. Komen Foundation done fucked up huge
* If you’re in Los Angeles between now and May 6th, please go to my beloved LACMA and check out In Wonderland: The Surrealist Adventures of Women Artists in Mexico and the United States. I certainly will be doing so as soon as humanly possible.
* The fashion industry now has a worker’s right’s organization for models. Good on Sara Ziff.
* Spring Break Tapes own Don Cash (click to grab the album free on band camp) made a listenable track out of a Lana Del Rey song and spit some sweet rhymes on top of it. Listen up!

January 31, 2012 - Blush

San Francisco, Earth - January 31, 2012
Temp: Allegedly 53° - but in actuality, cold AF with fog coming in hard.
Listening: Back To Work #75

And some links for the afternoon
* doubledark is a blog about fashion from Leah and Vanessa Hayes. Sometimes it makes you blush.
* I want this bathtub. The blue one. Right?
* Is Mitt Romney’s Candidacy Part of ‘The Eternal Plan’ of the Mormon Church? Awesome.

I’m tired. Here’s a story about trip hop and the (pretty good) discussion on MeFi.

January 30, 2012 - I Want To Live To There

San Francisco, Earth – January 30, 2012
Temp: 53° and glimmery / high of 65°
Listening: Oak and Haight / traffic and busses.

Monday:
* Ugg boots have been banned at a middle school outside of Philadelphia because they were allegedly being used as cell phone smuggling devices. This comes as a striking opposite to the ban that I put on Ugg boots in 2006. That ban was due to them being hideous and trashy.
* I will be making the recycled paper sewing basket that Apartment Therapy featured this morning. Total genius idea. I’ll use it for magazines…and also, knitting.
* My pal Melissa wrote a piece this weekend about the completely fucked up prospect of a DNA database made up of suspected buyers of sex. You should read it. Because that’s crazy.
* The plan to merge SAG and AFTRA has passed each national board, and is moving to a member vote. The idea of one union for actors is awesome. Some of you are members, so - you know. Make it happen. Details TK on Feb 3.
* Hôtel du Nord is one of the most beautiful things in the world. I want to live to there.

And now: go watch this video.

January 27, 2012 - “Nor am I a wizard.”

San Francisco, Earth - January 27, 2012
Warm and breezy.
Listening: The Gonzo Tapes

Week-end Links:
* Colombian prosecutors questioned a $2,000 contract awarded to a man for keeping rain away from the closing ceremony of the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Bogotá, stating that the professionalism requirement for public expenditures “doesn’t include shamans.” “Don’t call me a shaman,” the man once told reporters. “Nor am I a wizard.” (via Harper’s Weekly Review)
* AlterNet is calling out the remaining Republican candidates for…candidate for…President…or whatever they are doing for being full of shit about jobs, religion, morals, food stamps, public programs, politics in general, and just about everything else. It’s a good list.
* TSA agents at LAX mistook a lady’s insulin pump for a gun. I feel soooooo much safer.

* Favorite thing of the week A: rackk and ruin
* Favorite thing of the week B: Aubrey telling jokes at Sundance a few years ago. Laugh. Any way you can. It’s important.

Have a good weekend. Norm MacDonald loves you, and so do I.
